AUBERT SIGNS UP FOR MERZOUGA RALLY
Johnny Aubert is heading back to rally. Well… sort of!
The Frenchman is set to take on the Merzouga Rally in Morocco at the end of this month with Beta. Having competed in the Dakar Rally in 2012, the event will mark his first time racing with a road book in over two years.
Coming together by chance, Aubert hadn’t initially intended on competing in the race until an Internet rumour turned into a reality…
“It’s been a bit weird how this race has come about,” laughed Aubert, when we asked him about it. “During the final round of the EWC in France a lot of people came up to me and wished me good luck for the rally. But at that stage I hadn’t even considered riding in it, so I just sort of joked about it really.
“But one thing led to another and after a bit more talking with Beta I was entered in the Merzouga Rally. It was a crazy one to be honest!”
Aubert rode to a 14th place result in the 2012 Dakar Rally
So has he been brushing up on his navigation skills to prepare for the race?
“I’m excited to get the chance to try a rally again and the Merzouga Rally seems like a relaxed and fun race so it’s the right place to do it. It’s been a while though since I read a road book. My navigation skills are a bit rusty and I imagine the first day will be difficult – hopefully I won’t get too lost.
“Personally it’s all come as an unexpected surprise. I haven’t trained for this and I’ll only get the chance to try the bike twice in Italy and once in Morocco before we start. But I’m excited for the challenge. I know that I have the speed and the bike to get a good result.”
With a taste for rally again the big question is whether or not we’ll see him back in Dakar Rally in the near future?
“Will I return to the Dakar? One day I hope. It’s always something that’s on my mind so I’m sure I’ll be back when the time’s right!”
