It will be dark when Alfredo Gomez and the rest of the Extreme XL Lagares / Porto starters takle this brindge. Word has it that the organisers might have scrapped it and replaced it with an earth moving dumper truck, but either way one mistake and riders will end up in the drink! The night prologue is ‘around’ eight kilometers in length.
PORTO CITY PROLOGUE
The most important thing was to get to the finish, in one piece. But there had to be a winner – that man was Spain’s Alfredo Gomez. Clearly not wanting to take things steadily Gomez went for it, and topped the result sheets. It means he gets to start tonight’s night prologue last, and play catch up with the riders (all 200 of them) that’ll start ahead of him.
This is what the ‘other’ part of the prologue was like… Winding its way through the narrowest of streets it was certainly worth taking a look at before the racing started.
What you’re looking at is the Porto city prologue course, well the start and finish of it. The blue tents behind the big green tree are where things started and finished. What you’ll notice is that any rider who makes a big enough mistake gets wet! Thankfully, as far as we know, none did.
Portugal is without question an amazing place. Some of the villages the event passes through are simply beautiful. But as anyone who has ever raced in Portugal will tell – especially those who’ve race Extreme XL Lagares / Port before – the beauty can be deceiving.
