FOUR WINNERS AT THE RED BULL HARE SCRAMBLE
The Red Bull Hare Scramble certainly lived up to it’s fearsome reputation with Alfredo Gomez, Jonny Walker, Graham Jarvis and Andreas Lettenbichler needing to team up to finish.
After last year’s high finishing rate, it was clear race organisers wanted to whittle the number of finishers right down. And with only five guys making to the end – Mario Roman included – they did exactly that.
From the beginning the race seemed it’s normal self, actually a decent race for victory was on the cards.
Jonny Walker was first to emerge from the quarry with the race lead and put on a charge to pull away.
Graham Jarvis was around fourth but Taddy Blazusiak was the first casualty when he crashed heavily on the first hill climb.
By Carl’s Diner Walker was in the lead but Jarvis had reduced an early five minute advantage to two minutes while Alfredo Gomez was charging forward following two early crashes. He was third and looking strong.
Wade Young, Andreas Lettenbichler and Mario Roman weren’t too far away either.
After that things got weird. Proper weird.
Walker nursing a damaged radiator stopped to top it up as Jarvis and Gomez rode past. But unknown to everyone a secret section – Downtown – lay ahead.
After 10 tries Jarvis knew it was impossible to get up alone and he, Gomez, Walker and then Lettenbichler and Wade Young team up. It took close to 90 minutes of hard graft to get through it.
From there they ended riding to the finish where all four declared winners as Young got disqualified for missing a checkpoint.
Mario Roman, who was just behind and riding pretty much alone – incredible effort from him – also got to the end just a couple of seconds adrift.
So that was pretty much Erzberg 2015, four winners in one crazy day…
