IVAN CERVANTES EYES UP 2016 DAKAR RALLY
Five-time world champion Ivan Cervantes has revealed that he’s considering a serious switch to rally and aims to contest the Dakar Rally from as early as 2016…
In a recent interview Ivan Cervantes let slip that it’s his goal to follow in Marc Coma’s steps by building a future in the Dakar.
Talking openly for the first time in Spanish EnduroPro, Cervantes confirmed he envisions a change of direction. The KTM rider admitted he has already started working on his navigation skills with an initial but clear goal to enter the 2016 edition of the Dakar Rally.
KTM’s only Spanish factory rider in the EWC made a strong point by stating that: “It would be a great honour if KTM, my family, could see me as Marc Coma’s possible future successor.”
Ruling out any rumour to continue his career with a Toyota car, Marc Coma recently renewed his contract to race the 2016 Dakar with KTM. But after 12 participations and five epic wins on a bike, Coma too might be looking for some change soon.
Among a group of Spanish riders who dream of stepping in Coma’s shoes, Cervantes’ brilliant career is a real advantage. Another benefit is Cervantes’ strong links with KTM, the brand with which he won four world titles in Enduro and one in SuperEnduro.
Nothing is officially confirmed yet. If Cervantes doesn’t make the transition in 2016, his plan is to be a KTM official rider in 2017. Any change has to be made in the correct direction, with Ivan adding:
“If I race (the rallies), it’ll be to get some good results. I prefer getting well prepared and go for it 100% from the start. Always with my feet on the ground.”
