Micheluz Wins & Brits Shine At EEC Spanish Opener

Defending champion Maurizio Micheluz got the defence of his European Enduro Championship off to a perfect start in Antans, Spain but shining performances from Britain ensured an explosive season opener.

In the dry, hot and dusty Spanish conditions it was reigning champion Micheluz that claimed the overall win. Winning day one outright and then placing third overall on day two, the Suzuki mounted rider also secured maximum points in the Senior E1 category.

But with Britain filling out the remainder of the top five, plus an impressive day two victory from KTM’s Tom Sagar it was also a weekend to remember for the Brits.

Fourth on day one but improving to second on day two, Husqvarna’s Jamie Lewis placed as runner-up to Micheluz while also topping the Senior E2 classification.

Impressing in his debut ride in the European Enduro Championship, KTM’s Steve Holcombe was on top form on day one. Pushing Micheluz hard for the overall win, the young Brit finished as runner-up. Slipping back to sixth on day two, Holcombe ended round one third overall while also securing maximum points in the Junior E1 class.

Moving up to the Senior E1 ranks for 2014, Husqvarna’s Jack Rowland was in a confident mood in Spain. Narrowly missing out on the outright win to finish third overall, Rowland placed third on day one and then fifth on day two to take fourth overall. Runner-up to Micheluz in Senior E1, Rowland got his season off to a solid start.

Suffering engine problems KTM’s Tom Sagar disappointingly failed to finish day one. Bouncing back to win day two outright, Sagar completed the top five.

Adding to the British celebration, 17-year-old Brad Freeman also made his debut EEC ride one to remember by picking up the overall win in the Junior U20 class.
