Onboard – Roof of Africa 2013

The 2013 Roof of Africa lived up to its reputation as the Mother of Hard Enduro. Heavy rain quickly made the rocky mountain trails incredibly tricky for the majority of the competitors entered. We ride with Andreas Draxl, a Bronze rider, competing in his first Roof
We got a massive response to the story “Surviving the Elements – Tales From the Roof” we posted last Friday. In case you missed it, visit the link – it’s an inspiring read.
We’ve since found out that the story was penned by Stefan Janse van Rensburg (Moam Racing), who was competing in the Sliver category. An experienced competitor at the Roof, he was hoping for a good result in 2013. But the harsh conditions and a night in the mountains kept him from achieving that goal. He vows to return in 2014.
Jaco Uys (Stormjaers Racing) was entered in the Gold category. Unfortunately he crashed during the Thursday time trial, ended up visiting the hospital and was given the all clear to start Friday. Jacked up on painkillers he rode for almost 10 hours only to later find out that he had infact broken his arm.
Rider #3 was Andreas Draxl (Bronze). It was his first Roof and what an experience that was. Despite working his way inside the top 30 it wasn’t enough to finish the gruelling the Roof of Africa.
Many thanks to Stefan, Katherine, Francois, Dries and Duncan for getting in touch to fill in the blanks. Roll on 2014!
