Our experience at the Malle Mile

Malle Mile has been on our to-do list for some time and despite COVID-19 affecting our race diary, we managed to make the event, kick back and rep the Michelin brand in the Metropolis trade area.

In the spirit of the event, we got together on what we thought were inappropriate motorcycles…all on different varieties of Michelin tyres. Read on for a full race report of the event…

Ollie Keane

Having only ridden trials, we put Ollie out on the little Rothmans TLR 200 on Michelin X11 trial tyres inflated to 15psi. They worked well in the hardpack conditions and Ollie soon pinched Daryl Bolters Immaculate 1989 Honda Cr 125 Evo on Michelin Starcross 5. We were expecting to see some flipping action from Ollie as he’s never ridden an MX bike before but he did really well and made his finals!

Daryl  Bolter

Neil Hawker bought his Husqvarna Dakar 450 complete with crash damage and bent bars from this year’s event more as a static display. However, Daryl pushed Neil to borrow the beast. Considering Daryl is known as a 125 specialist former Euro and British 125 Enduro champion, he was chucking the Big Husky around and getting fantastic grip from the Michelin desert tyres and Bib Mousse. The only downside to this is that Daryl now wants to do the Dakar…  So if anyone wants to loan him a new Rally bike please get in touch!

Neil Hawker

Back to Neil – As a chief instructor at BMW, for off-road skills, he’s used to doing things on 1200cc BMW GS. We were assuming he would rock up on a BMW but instead, out the back of his van the Beast of a 1200cc V twin Indian FTR appeared (on loan from Bike World and Chris Northover). Michelin Anakee Wilds were fitted and the grip was insane, and with the straight-through SS pipe, it literally shook the ground.

Al Ranger

Having built up an 89 Honda Dominator Scrambler over the winter with John Towle, it was time to prove this bike goes as well as it looks. Michelin Enduro Mediums were fitted and with Bib Mousse and the Dommi hooked up, it ran really well for 31-year-old road legal trail bike!

Our conclusion?

So four riders, five bikes, all at the same event and all on different Michelin tyres… Which were the best? ALL OF THEM!

Huge thanks to the Malle team for making us feel so welcome… Make sure you next years event in the diary! Also big thanks to Sarah Sadd for the photos!
