Tom Sagar Crowned 2013 British Enduro Champion

KTM UK’s Tom Sagar has clinched the overall 2013 British Enduro Championship title at the final round of the season, the Diss MCC Muntjac Enduro in Thetford.

Entering the sixth and final round of the series as the overall championship leader, Sagar didn’t fail to disappoint and secured the title with a brilliant podium result. Knowing he needed to finish fifth or better to win the championship if closest rival Jamie McCanney recorded a winning result – Sagar did exactly what he needed to do and placed third.

“It feels incredible to have won this year’s British Enduro Championship,” told Tom. “Coming into the race I knew what I needed to do to win the title but for some reason my opening test was terrible. I hit all the lines I wanted to but my time just wasn’t competitive enough. Ending lap one in seventh left me with a lot work to do.”

With Jamie McCanney (Husqvarna) setting the pace to secure the outright win, Sagar got his day off to a slow start on the opening special test and placed seventh. Upping his pace on the second test, Sagar then gave it his all on the third test to fight his way back to third. Now back in title winning contention, the KTM rider maintained his position during the final three tests to end his year as the BEC champion.

“I pushed hard on the second test and clawed some time back. On the third test I was 100 per cent committed and worked my way up to third. I knew then I could win the title so I just tried to hold my position for the remainder of the race. Winning the BEC – for the third time – means a lot. I can’t thank KTM UK and Colwyn Bay Motorcycles enough for their support throughout 2013.”

Making his debut ride in the BEC aboard his Fowlers Motorcycles KTM, Danny McCanney secured an impressive overall runner-up result while topping the Enduro 1 category. Holding second overall throughout the day, the Manxman topped the final two special tests to end 2013 in impressive form.

With Sagar chasing McCanney home for third in the overall Championship class results, Spain’s Mario Roman (Husaberg) was fourth with Daryl Bolter (KTM) completing the top five.

Ending his day in sixth Jonny Walker (KTM) secured the British Enduro 3 Championship.

“I’m really pleased to have ended my season with the British Enduro 3 Championship,” confirmed Walker. “I struggled on the first two special tests and that cost me a lot of time. I dropped back to eighth but by halfway through the day I had recovered to fourth. With three riders separated by one second entering the final test I made a small mistake and got pushed back to sixth.”

In the Expert class, the battle for championship honours was played out between Ryan McLean and Brad Freeman. Winning all three tests, McLean claimed the Expert class win, but with Freeman finishing just 13 seconds behind the Scot to claim second it was Freeman who clinched the overall Expert title.
